So here's the thing. People generally view the Fediverse (and Mastodon in particular) as "Twitter alternative". I think this is misleading.

Twitter is mostly consumption. You follow key people and consume their content.

Mastodon is the opposite. It is about communities, that you are encouraged to participate in.

People coming here from Twitter often bring a Twitter mindset and run into this disconnect.

"There a so few people here, it's boring" - The local timeline represents only the tip of the iceberg. You won't see most of what's going in public timelines (replies and retoots won't appear there and many people toot "não listada" or "Seguidores somente"). Trust me, i only follow 160 people and i can't keep up with my home timeline. There's so much going on.

"My favorite celebrity is not on here" - Good. Your favorite celebrity probably doesn't see Mastodon as something viable to boost their reach. And they are right. This is a feature, not a bug.

"My friends are not on here" - I hear ya. Invite them. And make new friends.

Talking about celebs, anyone remember that time when Wil Wheaton (Star Trek TNG's Wesley Crusher) joined a Mastodon instance and then got bullied out?
